The kitchen is the room that gets dirty fastest and shows it most — grease clings to surfaces, appliances trap grime you can’t see, and a “quick wipe” routine only ever deals with the top layer. A proper deep clean works through the room in a specific order so you’re not undoing work you’ve already done.

Here’s how to do it properly, start to finish.

What You’ll Need

  • Degreaser or a vinegar/warm water solution
  • Bicarbonate of soda (for tougher grease and oven grime)
  • Microfibre cloths (a few — don’t use the same one everywhere)
  • An old toothbrush for tight corners and grout
  • Rubber gloves
  • Mop and bucket

Step 1: Clear and Declutter

Empty worktops completely and take everything off open shelving. You can’t deep clean around clutter — this also gives you a natural moment to bin anything expired in the process.

Step 2: Tackle the Oven First

Start here because it needs the longest dwell time. Make a paste of bicarbonate of soda and water, spread it across the interior (avoiding heating elements), and leave it for at least an hour — ideally overnight. While it sits, move on to the next steps.

Step 3: Empty and Clean Cupboards

Take everything out, wipe shelves with warm soapy water or a mild degreaser, and dry before replacing items. Wipe cupboard fronts and handles — this is where grease and fingerprints build up fastest and get overlooked in a regular clean.

Step 4: Deep Clean the Fridge

Remove all food, take out shelves and drawers where possible and wash them separately, then wipe the interior with a vinegar-water solution. Check and wipe the door seals — mould builds up here more than anywhere else in the fridge.

Step 5: Worktops and Splashbacks

Degrease thoroughly, paying particular attention to the area directly around the hob. For stubborn marks, a bicarbonate of soda paste with light scrubbing lifts most residue without scratching most surfaces.

Step 6: Sink and Taps

Scrub the sink basin, descale the taps (a vinegar-soaked cloth wrapped around the tap for 15 minutes works well), and clean the plughole and any visible pipework.

Step 7: Return to the Oven

Wipe out the bicarbonate of soda paste with a damp cloth — it should lift most of the loosened grime with it. Finish with a light vinegar spray to remove any residue, then clean the oven door glass and racks separately.

Step 8: Extractor Fan and Filter

Remove the filter if possible and soak it in hot, soapy water while you finish the rest of the room. Wipe down the fan housing itself, which collects more grease than most people expect.

Step 9: Small Appliances

Wipe down the microwave (inside and out), toaster (empty crumb tray), and kettle exterior. Descale the kettle if it’s been a while.

Step 10: Floors, Last

Sweep or vacuum first to remove debris, then mop thoroughly — including corners and behind any moveable units. Doing this last means you’re not walking crumbs and residue back across a clean floor.

  4. Fridge
  5. Worktops and splashbacks

FAQ

How long does a full kitchen deep clean take? Realistically 2–4 hours for an average kitchen, depending on how long it’s been since the last proper clean.

How often should I deep clean my kitchen? Every 3–6 months for most households, with weekly maintenance in between to keep grease from building up as fast.

What’s the best way to deal with really stubborn baked-on oven grime? Extended dwell time is the key — leave the bicarbonate of soda paste overnight rather than for an hour if the buildup is significant. For very neglected ovens, a specialist oven cleaning product may be needed.

Is it worth hiring a professional for this? If your kitchen hasn’t had a proper deep clean in over six months, or you simply don’t have a free afternoon, a professional deep clean will typically get further into appliances and behind fixtures than most people manage themselves.
